Cheapest way to travel & stay in Lamu

A number of my blog “African Safaris Blog” readers have asked me to comment on the cheapest way to travel from Mombasa to Lamu, below are some highlights………….

Where is Lamu???
Lamu town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. bLamu town is also the headquarters of Lamu District and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lamu is a place like no other, a peaceful tropical island where life is lived at it’s own relaxed rhythm, but a place whose history is as mysterious and fascinating as the winding streets of it’s medieval stone town. The island itself is a beautiful place of rolling dunes and endless beaches, where tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations and lateen sailed dhows ply the waters. But Lamu’s real attraction is its Old town.

How to travel there??
There are a number of options available to access Lamu; by air or by road, in both ways you will have to take a boat at the jetty to take you to the island a journey that takes you around 20 – 30 minutes depending on the kind of a boat you are using (either speed boat or normal boat).

Travelling by air will automatically be expensive to I will not follow this route, so I will explore travelling by road. The journey takes around six hours with a stopover at Malindi to allow passengers to alight and stretch their legs. The road from Mombasa to Lamu is also in bad shape, and becomes a dirt road towards the end, so the bus ride is not very comfortable.

The total driving time from Mombasa to Lamu on the bus is supposed to be 6 hours, but usually ends up being at least 8 hours. I recommend you use  Tawakal Bus Company charging KES 700 and departing 0700 hrs, 0930hrs and1100hrs. It is advisable to book a return ticket to avoid any disappointment on the return day. The departure schedules for Lamu to Mombasa journey are; 0700hrs and 1300 hrs. If you have a return ticket remember to make a reconfirmation at the companies office in Lamu. You can also use Tahmeed Bus Company on phone +254710497979). They charge KES 600. Departure time should be 0830hrs and 1030hrs.

Where to stay!!
The cheapest place to stay in is Tamarid Guest house charging around KES 2,000 per person per day. It has two apartments each with a capacity of holding four guests, facility is self catering and you can cook your favorite dish or adopt a local recipe. +25472749168
